We customize our approach to the individual elementary students so they can adapt to the introduction of fractions earlier. Many of our students were diagnosed with ADHD which can be a challenge with these early concepts.

We introduce symmetry so that halves can be better understood.

We make learning addition fun, students need a good grasp on addition so they can figure out the numerators in various types of fraction related questions.

We combine hands-on manipulatives with digital interactive models that let the students verify they answered the questions correctly.

Practice numbers, the use of a ruler, and have fun with coloring.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

We have adapted some of our methods to be more hands-on, to address changes in curriculum for the elementary grades.

Alberta Education implemented a new K–6 math curriculum starting in September 2022, with full rollout for K–3 and optional adoption for Grades 4–6. The changes emphasize conceptual understanding, numeracy foundations, and clearer progression across grades.

For example, Alberta's updated K–4 math curriculum introduces fractions earlier and with more conceptual depth than before. Here is how "Fraction Instruction" has changed for K–4:  

Earlier Introduction Kindergarten

Students begin exploring equal parts of shapes and objects (e.g., halves).

Grade 1–2: Fractions are introduced as parts of wholes using visual models (e.g., circles, rectangles, sets).

 Grade 3: Students compare and order unit fractions (like ½, ⅓, ¼) and begin using number lines.

Grade 4: Emphasis shifts to equivalent fractions, comparing fractions with unlike denominators, and adding/subtracting fractions with like denominators.

There is also a stronger emphasis on visual models (area, set, and number line representations). Fractions are taught as numbers rather than just parts of shapes. Students explore relationships between fractions and whole numbers (e.g., improper fractions, mixed numbers in Grade 4). Students also learn formal fraction notation. There are a lot of real-world word-problems, e.g., recipes, measuring, to ground understanding.

Fraction vocabulary (numerator, denominator) is introduced with meaningful context, not just definitions. By comparison to the previous curriculum: previously, fractions were introduced more abstractly and later (often Grade 3+). The new curriculum was intended to build a fraction sense gradually, starting with intuitive ideas in Kindergarten.
